Las sable-bayonetas para el Fusil y Carabinas MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909"

sable-bayoneta MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909" 1ra.

MAUSER saber-bayonet "Argentine Model 1909" 1st. Pattern (Solingen)

Also known as "the ModArg09 low muzzle ring bayonet"

Origin or destiny: Republic of Argentina

Respective weapon: it was exclusively designed for the bolt on action MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909" Infantry Rifle and Engineer Carbine in 7.65 caliber (7.65x53mm cartridge).

Manufacturer and manufacturing date: it was made in Solingen (Germany) by WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & Co from 1909 and perhaps extending during one or two years because its low production. Until today, there are only pieces with the A series stock number (don´t confuse with the A series belonging to the ModArg09 2nd pattern bayonet).

Technical data:
399 mm blade length (15,71")
6,3 mm blade width (0,25")
25 mm blade heigth (0,98")
133 mm hilt length, included crossguard (5,24")
15,5 mm inner diameter of the muzzle ring (0,61")
549 mm overall length, included scabbard (21,61")
497 g bayonet weight, without scabbard (17.53 oz)
705 g bayonet weight, included scabbard (24.87 oz)

Identification Marks: on the blade right ricasso MODELO ARGENTINO 1909, National Crest with laurel sheets (remember that there are ModArg91 bayonets with no laurel sheets around their Crests) and A0848 serial stock number (matching with the scabbard Nº!); on the blade left ricasso WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & Co, SOLINGEN, and near the crossguard on the back blade there is placed an A letter with asterisk. Watching the crossguard on lower front face a reverse C with asterisk just on middle of the quillion, a very little G on left upper front face, and a reverse big G on the middle right crossguard side. Last visible stamps are the RA letters inside of an oval placed on left pommel face (RA = Republic of Argentina). Two hidden stamps are the No. 812 on the front wall inside of the block which is part of the press button, and a N letter at the back wall of the same block. About the scabbard the markings are the A0848 serial stock number (matching with the blade!) located between the throat mouth and the frog stud, in parallel to this place but on the reverse of the scabbard a D letter with an inner asterisk and a cross inside of a circle; ending with a little E on the right side of the throat mouth.

Features and some Observations: polished straight blade of (*) Special melted steel of Solingen for blades, fullered on both sides, straight sides spine, single edge with a spear point and smooth false edge of 50 mm approximately. (*) Iron from Sweden was used for the crossguard, which it has a low ring and a hooked quillion with ball finial. Hilt formed with two grips of (*) Walnut wood with one by side cleanig holes near the crossguard and pressed to the tang by two rivets and their nuts of (*) Steel from ingot with low carbon content using a distance of 50 mm between both (center to center). The slant pommel of (*) Iron from Sweden, has the locking mechanism for releasing or adjusting the bayonet to the rifle lug operated by the right press button that manages the internal catch located into the T-U slot. The scabbard of (*) Sheet rolled steel has part of its original bluing, a ball finial, a mouth piece (with internal springs) attached to its body by two side rivets, and a rounded oval style frog stud to fix a leather frog. Ball, throat rivets and frog button were made of (*) Steel from ingot with low carbon content; mouth piece with springs (*) The throat of iron and the springs of steel.

Comments: this Saber-Bayonet (a lot of collectors prefer the term "Sword Bayonet") has an excellent design and was manufactured using high quality materials. It was part of the first delivers to come in to Argentina (a simple deduction by its serial number and some other features that I´ll detail) and although it shows a minimal wear it could resist the course of time (Yeah, more of a century!) It´s weird that its blade received a smooth chromium plated treatment but not from its manufacturer, may be someone or an armory that gave that proceeding to prevent the corrosion by lack of good cleaning, or perhaps it was destined to be a Ceremonial/Dress/Walking Out/Parade bayonet and it need a bright shiny finish for those moments. All in all the treatment was made in a perfect way but at present it´s very difficult to appreciate the vertical stripes all along the both sides edge of the blade typical from those `solingenean´ ModArg91/09 bayonets blades from that era, that in this case the stripes seem as simple lines with poor definition. There are few hits which caused a very little damage on some places of the bayonet (three on the blade edge, two on the handguard and only one on the rear of the pommel). This 1st version is excellent for fencing without the rifle (the saber-bayonet alone style) thanks to its hilt length with 10 mm more than the other ModArg09, and its scabbard is perfect to protect the blade and also as a defense for any people who fight against one or several adversaries. For me as an Argentinian collector, this piece is very important and I hope that in a near future it can be a neccesary bayonet for any collector from this world (moreover,in comparison with the other ModArg79/91/09 it was/is/will be a bit pricey depending its matching serial No., state of maintenance, no lackings, etc).

Important Considerations: until today this ModArg09 1st pattern is considered as the OFFICIAL bayonet for the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" rifle and carbines and not as you could find in some web sites or forums where this is refered as "the Original"; they´re wrong! All the ModArg09 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th patterns saber-bayonets and their variants having been manufactured in Solingen/Germany or in Argentina (by AAMZ or DGFM-FMAP) are Originals and were Accepted by our Argentine Armed Forces and National Security Forces too, where the ModArg09s gave their services. And why it is OFFICIAL? First, it was exclusively designed with a low ring which it let to be fixed at the rifle barrel mouth like any other but it could also allow to introduce the rifle cleaning rod into its pommel/hilt making a strong and compact combination between both weapons at the same way like the bayonets with no ring for the Gewehr 98 from the Imperial Germany of that era. Second, this 1st pattern has a hilt with 10 mm of length more than the other ModArg09 bayonets because it did not need any adapter to be attached at the rifle lug contrary to the other 2nd, 3rd and 4th patterns which they have a shorter hilt and they need the Ricchieri adapter to be fixed at the rifle but allowing the cleaning rod be out of the hilt (the mentioned adapter let also the old ModArg91 brass/aluminum gripped bayonets, to be used with the MAUSER Argentine Model 1909 rifle or engineer carbine). Third and last, this type of saber-bayonet and its data and schematic graphics appeared in the Technical Booklet from 1961 (replacing the one from1911 but using the same edition without any changes) as the only one designed for the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" Infantry Rifle and Engineer Carbine, with its low ring and 10 mm more of length in its hilt; but the other ModArg09 patterns did not show ever. Remember please, all the ModArg09 bayonets patterns are ORIGINALS, the simply difference is that the 1st pattern is the OFFICIAL. Note: and what about with the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" Cavalry Carbines? All the carbines manufactured in Germany by the DWM were designed and constructed without any system to fix any bayonet, but years after they were modified to carry either one ModArg09 bayonet except the 1st pattern because its low ring and long hilt didn´t let to be attach to any of the Cavalry Carbines 1909 (one thing more: the Cavalry Carbines 1909 manufactured in Argentina had been made with the neccesary lug to fix bayonets).

Last Comments: there are several technical denominations which they had an asterisk and surely you could see them in the Features and some Observations item (*) Special melted steel of Solingen for blades, Iron from Sweden, Walnut wood, Steel from ingot with low carbon content, Sheet rolled steel, The throat of iron and the springs of steel, all of them (in spanish, of course) belongs to the Technical Booklet inscribed in the Regulation Register from the Army (R. Red. 2a) under the signature F.T. - Mat. B. 1 and the name "MAUSER" RIFLES AND CARBINES adding Derogate to the R.R.M. 60 (Utilizing the Edition of 1911) with 1961 realization date in the Graphical Workshops from the Militar Geographical Institute located in BUENOS AIRES in PUBLIC character with (Permanent) stability, managing its publication through the SECRETARY OF WAR and keeping in archive by the Logistical General Inspection. Although this Technical Booklet has minimal mistakes, it is a great and excellent source to know about the rifle/carbines and their accesories as this special saber-bayonet. My last comment about this booklet: it was titled "MAUSER" RIFLES AND CARBINES but it is exclusively dedicated for the Argentine Model 1909 (only this model, not the 1879 neither the 1891), as it demonstrates into all its pages.

Thanks for your attention, and Kind regards!

sable-bayoneta MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909" 2da. Versión, 2da. Variante (Solingen)

Aclaraciones I: chequeen éstos 3 importantes detalles con asteriscos

OBSERVACIONES Y AGREGADOS AL LIBRO BAYONETAS DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA - Ed. 1997

02. Número 07: Bayoneta Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909. Segundo Modelo.

MAUSER saber-bayonet "Argentine Model 1909" 2nd. Pattern, 2nd. Variant (Solingen)

Origin or destiny: Republic of Argentina

Respective weapon: designed for the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" Infantry Rifle and Engineer/Pioneer Carbine, bolt-on system in 7.65 caliber (7.65x53 mm cartridge). This bayonet needs the Riccheri Adapter to get a right fit to the mentioned weapons, however its design allows to be fixed without adapter to the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1891" Infantry Rifle, and also to the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" Cavalry Carbine, obviously if this carbine was modified to accept bayonet (*) or constructed by DGFM-FMAP which it already had its neccesary fixing lug.

Manufacturer and manufacturing date: it was made in Solingen (Germany) by WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & Co, and there isn´t available its manufacturing date, perhaps the pacted quantities of this ModArg09 2nd-2nd were delivered at middle/ending 1911 or beginning 1912.

Technical data: 15.75 inches blade length
0.25in blade width
0.96in mm blade heigth
4.76in hilt length, included crossguard
0.61in inner diameter of the muzzle ring
21.10in overall length, included scabbard
17.78 ounces bayonet weight without scabbard
25.50 oz bayonet weight, included scabbard

Identification Marks: right blade ricasso MODELO ARGENTINO 1909 over of the M 1668 serial number (matching with the scabbard) and in middle the National Crest/Coat of Arms with laurel sheets (remember there are ModArg91s with or without laurel sheets around); left ricasso WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & Co, SOLINGEN, and a blurred and supposed A letter with asterisk over the blade spine and ricasso zone. Crossguard shows an inverted C with asterisk on the lower front side where the hooked quillion is formed, and at left side a very blurred P with asterisk (P and A with asterisks were stamped in the all ModArg09s manufactured in Germany, except those ones made in Argentina and with own materials). Pommel shows at its right side a small N letter over an extreme of the locking press button and this system has an internal block with two hidden marks: the 421 number on its anterior wall and another N letter on the posterior one. Scabbard shows M 1668 serial number (matching with the blade) between throat and frog stud; at back there´s a D with internal asterisk and a Circle with an inner Cross, over the mouth piece a blurred small E and at its left an inverted small 1 number, at last, on the ball finial an Oval with the inner RA letters.

Features and some Observations: steel blade, straight, polished, fullered on both sides, spine with straight sides, single edged, spear point and false edge of approximately 50 mm. Steel crossguard with high muzzle ring and forward swept quillion with ball finial. Hilt formed by 2 walnut grip scales without cleaning holes (**) adjusted to the blade´s tang by 2 steel rivets and their washers, with 38 mm of separation from center to center and 43 mm from end to end (***). Slant pommel of Swedish steel, with button on the right side which allows to adjust or release the bayonet to the rifle using the inner nail located inside the T-U type slot. Scabbard of sheet rolled steel showing a little of its original blueing, with ball finial, mouth piece (with internal springs) attached to the scabbard by 2 side rivets, and oval frog stud for adjust a leather frog.

Comments: Saber-Bayonet of great design and construction, but with some details as: the two stains, one on the blade tip (both sides, zone of the false edge), and the other obscuring the National Crest and its denomination on the ricasso area (perhaps a kind of chemical that was used as a cleaner without knowing its properties and/or reactions on the steel); and last detail is the lack of the Oval with RA letters, showing signs of wear on the area where they should be stay (possibly an abrasion over a deep oxidation or if the marks were poorly stamped they could be easily ground away). Pros of this bayonet are the excellent original polish of its blade moreover the well-defined vertical stripes from its cutting edge typical of the "solingeneans" ModArg91/09 blades; and the right functioning without troubles of its internal locking mechanism to adjust/release the bayonet from its respective weapon. Ending this report, keep in mind the advantages of this pattern as any of other ModArg91/09 for the Fencing with only Sabre-Bayonets, because they are so lightweight for practice the techniques with no problems.

Important Considerations I: check out these 3 important details with asterisks
(*) transcription from the original annex incorporated in the last edition of the book "Bayonets from the Argentine Republic" from authors Mario A. Suffriti y Oscar C. Albino, it shows a special topic referred to the modified Cavalry Carbines (I´ve added dotted lines and text in italics to enhance the original writing which I extracted from the book, note that it´s common that the ModArg09 2nd pattern is designated as Mauser "Argentine Model 1909" Second Model)
                                        ...................................................................

November 2006

OBSERVATIONS AND ADDINGS TO THE BOOK BAYONETS FROM ARGENTINE REPUBLIC - Ed. 1997

02. Number 07: Mauser Bayonet Argentine Model 1909. Second Model.

Add in OBSERVATIONS:

The Mauser Carbines Argentine Model 1909, known them as of Cavalry, were also used by artillery personnel and other units, moreover of the cavalry. In their original factory form they couldn´t fit bayonet. In 1925 it was decided to adapt them for the use of bayonet and the design of the modification was entrusted to the firm Fritz Werner AG of Berlin-Martinikenfelde in 1926, the work was realized by the Esteban de Luca Arsenal.                                        ...................................................................

(**) as from the ModArg09 2nd 1st the hilt is shortened 10 mm and the muzzle ring is elevated achiving be higher than the one of ModArg09 1st, allowing to be fixed to the weapon with the help of the Riccheri Adapter; by this way, the firearm cleaning rod doesn´t need to be inserted into the bayonet hilt and that rod shows itself staying out, for that reason the grip cleaning holes of ModArg09 1st weren´t more necessary, although they were still made in ModArg09 2nd 1st but definitely were eliminated in the design of ModArg09 2nd 2nd.

(***) Together with the height of the muzzle ring, the distance between rivets that adjust the hilt grips also shows to what pattern/variant corresponds your "solingenean" ModArg09. Remember that the ModArg09 1st has distances: 1.97 inches between rivets from center to center and 2.13 inches from end to end of each nut; the ModArg09 2nd 1st has: 1.97 in from center to center and 2.17 in from end to end (according to the thickness of their rivets heads) and owing to its short pommel, one of its rivets is very closer to that area; and at last the ModArg09 2nd 2nd has: 1.50 in from center to center and 1.69 in from end to end, achieving a more harmonious aspect for the figure of the hilt.

Important Considerations II: the materials for the manufacturing of the ModArg09 1st are the same for the ModArg09 2nd 1st and also for this ModArg09 2nd 2nd (without changes about their qualities, only structural visual differences between them owing to the customer requirements) and those materials were specified in the Technical Booklet called "MAUSER" RIFLES AND CARBINES: Special melted steel of Solingen for blades, Iron from Sweden, Walnut wood, Steel from ingot with low carbon content, Sheet rolled steel, The throat of iron and the springs of steel

Remember: all ModArg09s with their patterns and variants, either be the Germans ones (Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co.) or Argentines ones (AAMZ and DGFM-FMAP), they were all Originals and were Accepted by our Armed Forces and from National Security where they provided services. The only one for consider as Official is the ModArg09 1st, however the other patterns and variants with or without modifications made in their designs are so important as the Official one.

And don´t forget that all these ModArg09 patterns and variants (with exception of the ModArg09 1st) need the Riccheri Adapter for a right fixing to the MAUSER "Argentine Model 1909" Rifle or Engineer/Pioneer Carbine, not so in the Cavalry Carbine from the same model, as long as it has the adequate modification or it was made with the fixing system for bayonet.

Value: 4 scores.

sable-bayoneta MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909" 3ra. Versión, Variante A.R.A.

MAUSER saber-bayonet "Modelo Argentino 1909" 3rd Pattern, ARA Variant (A.R.A.  = Republic of Argentina Navy), manufactured by A.A.M.Z. = Marine Artillery Arsenal of Zárate

Also known (in foreign countries) as Modelo Argentino 1909/47 Second Model

Origin or Destiny: Republic of Argentina.

Respective Weapon: designed for the MAUSER Infantry Rifle (and Engineer Carbine) "Modelo Argentino 1909" in 7.65 caliber (7.65x53 mm cartridge). Remember: ARA Marine Corps never used D.W.M. Cavalry Carbines (neither the previously first one without bayonet attachment system neither the later modified one that carried the aforementioned system and obviously either the one manufatured by D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P.).

Manufacturer and Manufacturing Date: manufactured between 1947 and 1958, by MARINE ARTILLERY ARSENAL of ZÁRATE (A.A.M.Z. = Arsenal Artillería de Marina Zárate) located in Buenos Aires province, and belonging to the REPUBLIC of ARGENTINA NAVY (A.R.A. = Armada de la República de Argentina). Approximate production of this bayonet 3500 pieces.

Technical Data:
15.60 inches of blade length (396 mm)
4.80 in of hilt length, included crossguard (122 mm)
21.22 in of overall length, included scabbard (539 mm)
25.5 oz of overall weight, included scabbard (723 g)

Identification Marks: on blade right side ricasso and forming a sem-icircle MODELO ARGENTINO 1909, and inside of this the Republic of Argentina National Crest (both marks are somewhat blurred in all bayonets that belong to this pattern), in addition, the serial No. Z 1053 in coincidence with the one on the scabbard (letter Z attributed to ZARATE, close to the Z appears somewhat that seems to be two dots, although weakly stamped). On left side ricasso and in large capital letters A.R.A. inside a Rectangle with straight edges (letters interlaced with each other), and furthermore the letters A.A.M.Z. with dots (both marks are shown with perfect aspects). Last marks on the scabbard correspond to the serial No. Z1053 (in coincidence with the blade's one, and there's no space between the letter Z and the first number).

Features and some Observations: carbon steel straight blade, polished, with fullers on both sides, single edge, and a spear point with a smooth false edge (50 mm approx.). Steel polished crossguard with a high ring on its upper end and a hooked quillion with a ball finial on its lower end. Hilt has two walnut grips (texture assumes that it's wood from that tree), having a 72 mm of length at its upper border and 77 mm at the lower one. Grip scales are secured to the central tang by two rivets, having a distance of 35 mm starting from the inner edge from the holes which they house the rivets and 50 mm from the outer ones of the aforementioned holes. The steel pommel has an excellent polish and the classical slant (not so pronounced as the "Solingenean ModArg09s"), at the right side is observed the press buttom that release or adjust the internal attaching system for bayonet and that is located inside the T slot. Its scabbard (similar to the germans from Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co.), is made of sheet rolled steel with an original blueing; has a ball finial, a mouthpiece (with internal springs) and a oval stud that allows to adjust the traditional leather frog or also the other made up in cloth and which it was exclusively realized for our ARA Marine Corps and some other dependencies of the Argentine Navy.

Comment: this is a high quality Saber-Bayonet. It has a Germanic design very similar to the aspect of the ModArg09 2nd pattern 2nd variant. This "Navalized 3rd Pattern" has its steel with an unusual polish that results in an exceptional shine, perfect to accompany uniforms in Military Ceremonials, Parades and Walking Outs, in a nearest way that the Extra-Seitengewehre were used, or also in similar way utilized by different Armies of Europe. Its scabbard differs in details of the thickness from the German one, but looking at it without being too much a detailist person, no one notices the differences. Having a pommel with a T type attaching slot, it wasn't necessary to have the cleaning rectangular holes (near the crossguard) as the same ones used in the ModArg09 1st pattern and 2nd pattern 1st variant. This amazing piece was part of a great era from our Argentine Steel Industry, and its own manufacture was in charge of the prestigious Marine Artillery Arsenal of Zárate (A.A.M.Z. = Arsenal Artillería de Marina Zárate) belonging to our also important Republic of Argentina Navy (A.R.A. = Armada de la República Argentina). Remember that the two other Argentine companies closely related to the autochthonous construction of bayonets and other types of blade weapons were the Directorate General of Military Industries - Military Factory of Portable Weapons (D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. = Dirección General de Fabricaciones Militares - Fábrica Militar de Armas Portátiles) and the J. C. SUÁREZ & Co. but this last one was a civil company placed in the old Capital Federal, currently CABA (Note: J.C. Suárez & Co. never manufactured ModArg09s, I named it as a reference).

Clarification I: this pattern hasn't the classic T-U slot and for this reason the cleaning rod of the rifle doesn't need to be introduced inside its handle, and in addition, it has a hilt with a shortened length of 10 mm (compared with the ModArg09 1st pattern) and thanks to the Riccheri Adapter it allows that its cleaning rod remain on the outside while the ring of its guard is kept in an optimum height to be attached to the rifle muzzle. As not be requirired to insert the cleaning rod inside the hilt, its tang obviously lacks of an internal slot, and neither the rectangular cleaning holes are required as can be seen in the first two "Solingeneans" W.K.C. patterns (useful in the ModArg09 1st pattern, but totally useless in the ModArg09 2nd pattern 1st variant, and for that reason they have been removed in the ModArg09 2nd pattern 2nd variant, proving that in both bayonets of A.A.M.Z. and D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. their grip scales are definitely observed without those unnecessary holes). Different sources mention that have been produced an amount of 3500 units of this "Navalized ModArg09 made entirely in Argentine". Due to the little information obtained of them, it's assumed that they were manufactured as a replacement for lost or broken bayonets. But, in my opinion, they were only made to accompany or to be part of the uniforms in activities related to Ceremonials / Parades / Walking out / Out of Service (may be that's the reason for the immaculate appearance of my bayonet), but until now, there's no a true confirmation.

Clarification II: the first bibliography consulted (in Spanish) was "Bayonetas de la República Argentina" by the authors Mario A. Suffriti and Oscar C. Albino, the magnificent and remarkable Argentine book which shows all the studies/works related about each of the bayonets that were used in our Armed Forces and in our National Security Forces. The second important bibliography consulted (in English) was "Argentine Mauser Rifles 1871 - 1959" by author Colin Webster and in this case, this book is other excellent and magnificent source of teaching and guidance, not only of bayonets but also intended about our rifles and carbines Mauser. Great and perfect reference to know all those glorious Mauser firearms that equipped our Forces.

Note of great importance: remember that you can found this bayonet under the denomination of Modelo Argentino 1909/47 Second Model as it's specified by Colin Webster in his book "Argentine Mauser Rifles 1871 - 1959", and shouldn't be considered incorrect. On the other hand and contrary, you have the other denomination, in this case offered by Suffriti and Albino in their work "Bayonetas de la República Argentina / Bayonets of the Argentine Republic", where it's specified as Bayoneta Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 Tercer Modelo / Mauser Bayonet Model Argentino 1909 Third Model, which would not be considered incorrect either. Why these two different denomination? You must remember that the only bayonet that was designed, manufactured and assembled in Solingen of Germany and intended exclusively for the Mauser "Modelo Argentino 1909" Infantry Rifles and Engineer Carbines was the Official that appears in the Technical Booklet of 1910 (Field Manual as named by Colin Webster) and even in its 1961 re-edition. For that reason, we would have simply consider it as Bayonet "Modelo Argentino 1909", being this the only one that would have accompanied to the aforementioned firearms which served in our Armed Forces. But for technical and tactical reasons from these Argentine Forces, it was decided to modify that same First Official Pattern, developing all the Patterns and Variants that we currently know. For all these reasons, it is obvious that each author of books/magazines/manuals has considered in classifying them in the most appropriate and formal way according to their research. On my part, I preferred to name it as we know this Version or Model in Argentina, but clarifying its other possible appointment in various foreign publications more appropriate to the bibliographic media of any country in the World.
(Note: remember that originally, the "Modelo Argentino 1909" Cavalry Carbines had no bayonet attach system. Time later, those of the D.W.M. were modified for this  function, and in the case of those already manufactured from 1947 by the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P., these ones already carried it).
Thank you very much for your attention!

largo total, vaina incluida 538 mm

MAUSER saber-bayonet "Modelo Argentino 1909" 4th Pattern, EA variant, pre-5000 (previously to 5,000 units manufactured by D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P.)

Also known in foreign bibliographies as: Modelo Argentino 1909/47 bayonet First Model, D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. Arsenals, Early Army Model

Origin or destiny: Republic of Argentina.

Respective weapon: exclusively intended for the MAUSER "Modelo Argentino 1909" / "Argentine Model 1909" Cavalry Carbine, bolt action, caliber 7.65 (7.65x53mm Argentine cartridge) manufactured by the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P.. Its design also allowed to be fitted in the Infantry Rifle and Engineers Carbine of the same model (for that task, they had to carry the Riccheri Adapter attached).

Manufacturer and manufacturing date: it was built between 1948 and 1950 by the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. = Dirección General de Fabricaciones Militares - Fábrica Militar de Armas Portátiles (DIRECTORATE GENERAL of MILITARY INDUSTRIES - MILITARY FACTORY of PORTABLE WEAPONS) "Domingo Matheu", and a previous quantity of 5,000 units was produced.

Technical data:
blade length 15.67 in
hilt length, included crossguard 4.84 in
overall length, included scabbard 21.18 in
bayonet weight, without scabbard 18.45 oz

Identification Marks: Markings on the right ricasso: 1_ Argentine National Crest, 2_ E.A. (acronyms of Ejército Argentino = Argentine Army), 3_ F.M. 000.510 (the serial number of the bayonet preceded by the acronyms of Fabricaciones Militares = Military Industries). Markings on the left ricasso: 4_ D.G.F.M.-(F.M.A.P.) = acronym of the manufacturer's name DIRECCIÓN GENERAL de FABRICACIONES MILITARES - FÁBRICA MILITAR de ARMAS PORTÁTILES = DIRECTORATE GENERAL of MILITARY INDUSTRIES - MILITARY FACTORY of PORTABLE WEAPONS (last acronyms in parentheses), 5_ Sable Bayoneta (the classification of this edged weapon: Saber-Bayonet), 6_ MAUSER, 7_ Mod.-1909 (the Model to which the bayonet corresponds). The only markings on the scabbard: 8_ 000510 (between the mouth piece and the adjustment button for the leather belt frog).

Features and some Observations: carbon steel polished straight blade, spine with straight edges, fullered on both sides, spear point, and simple edge with a smooth false edge of 50 mm approximately. Steel crossguard with ring at its upper end and a hooked quillion with a ball finial at the lower end. Hilt formed by two walnut scales secured to the central tang by two rivets with their washers. Steel pommel with the classic slant, on its right side it's placed the press button that manages the latch located inside the T slot for release the bayonet when it is fitted. Scabbard of sheet rolled steel, original blued finish, tip with ball-type termination, mouthpiece adjusted by two side rivets, and oval frog stud to fix the leather belt frog.

Comment I: Saber-Bayonet built entirely in the Republic of Argentina with high quality materials, respecting the design of its predecessors manufactured by the W.K.C. of Solingen (externally only two exceptions: a slightly flattened back of the pommel and a less oblong scabbard). The whole structure of the hilt shows overall sturdiness as well as its blade, even in this last one its excellent polishing is noticeable. Two similar features shared between of this D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. ModArg09 pre-5000 intended the Argentine Army and the A.A.M.Z. ModArg09 intended for the Argentine Navy: 1_ the pommels of both Argentinian ModArg09s have a T-type fixing slot, unlike the T-U of the German W.K.C. ModArg09s (since the Argentinian ModArg09s haven't the internal tang cavity to insert part of the cleaning rod inside the hilt, necessary action in the 1st Pattern, although totally unnecessary with the two variants from the 2nd Pattern, for that reason, the small rectangular cleaning holes which are very close to the crossguard and are observed on the wooden grips of the "Solingenean" ModArg09s, were definetely removed from the Argentinian ModArg09s), 2_ the absence of the multiple markings observed on different areas of the W.K.C. ModArg09s and scabbards, in contrast to our A.A.M.Z. and D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. ModArg09s, in which only the necessary marks were stamped on both ricassos of their blades and on their scabbards between the mouth piece and the adjusting oval button for fit the leather belt frog.

Comment II: this piece belongs to the era in which our Argentine Iron and Steel Industry was in its great Splendor, allowing us nowadays, to be proud of the quality of the excellent Argentine Steel from several decades ago, for this reason, both the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P (General Directorate of Military Manufacturing - Military Factory of Portable Arms) as well as the A.A.M.Z. (Artillery Arsenal of Marina Zárate) and without forgetting the private company J. C. SUÁREZ y Cía. will always be remembered for having managed to supply our Forces with worthy and excellent products such as this bayonet (Remember: J.C. Suárez y Cia. did not manufacture "Modelo Argentino 1909" bayonets, although they did manufacture "Modelo Argentino 1909" Artillery Machetes, however, in their marks doesn't appear mentioning the model to which it belongs, only the letters with followed dots E.A).

Clarification I: It can be seen in this Pattern built entirely in Argentina four characteristics to take into account:
1) the attaching slot to the firearm is T-shaped (and not T-U) resulting in its hilt being 10 mm shorter compared to the 1st Pattern hilt, and allowing, in turn, to lack the internal tang cavity to introduce the cleaning rod of the firearm since it wasn't necessary as it was intended to accompany exclusively the Cavalry Carbine also manufactured by the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. (In case it is required to be attached to the Infantry Rifle or the Engineers Carbine, the Riccheri Adapter should be insert into the the bayonet stud of these firearms). 2) the blade tang from the A.A.M.Z. and the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. ModArg09s have no more the internal channel to insert the cleaning rod, for that reason, the wooden grip scales of both can be seen without the small rectangular cleaning holes that are appreciated on the ModArg09s of W.K.C. and so present on the 1st Pattern as on the two variants of the 2nd Pattern; 3) the Argentine National Crest placed on the right ricasso on the ModArg09 EA pre-5000 blade is the main characteristic to recognize if it's an EA previous or posterior to 5,000 units since the Crest of any EA post-5000 is thinner with a shape somewhat oval and doesn't have great definition like that of this EA pre-5000; 4) the marks on the left ricasso from the ModArg09s EA pre-5000 blade are apparently similar to those that can be seen on the ModArg09s EA post-5000, however, if you compare them carefully, you will find some barely detectable differences around their contours and sizes allowing you to recognize if this is an EA previous or posterior to 5,000 units (I have added some images which will help you perfectly to detect the characteristics that I have emphasized).

Clarification II: Much of this research can be found in the Excellent book "BAYONETAS de la REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA" by the Excellent authors of the same Mario A. Suffriti and Oscar C. Albino, which shows a clear and extensive classification of the bayonets used in our Armed Forces and also National Security. And another Excellent bibliographical source of teaching and guidance, in this case foreign, is the book "ARGENTINE MAUSER RIFLES 1871 - 1959" by the also Excellent author Colin Webster, in which you will be able to obtain data about the Argentine bayonets and also about the different Mauser Rifles and Carbines that equipped the Argentine Forces during different decades (in addition, an impressive information on the types of cartridges of the firearms studied, documentation from different periods, accessories corresponding to each weapon, machinery to stamp markings, etc.).

Important Note: You may find this same bayonet in specialized bibliographies not belonging to Argentina, called First Model 1909/47 D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. Arsenals, Early Army Model such as Colin Webster has specified in his book "Argentine Mauser Rifles 1871 - 1959" being correct. On the contrary, they have the denomination offered by Suffriti and Albino in their work "Bayonetas de la República Argentina", where this is specified as Mauser Bayonet Modelo Argentino 1909 Fourth Model, which is also correct. The explanation is too extensive but in a simplified way so that you can understand that, as there are different Patterns and Variants, both those designed, manufactured, and assembled by W.K.C. from Solingen in Germany as well as the autochthonous ones built entirely by the A.A.M.Z. and the D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P. in Argentina, it is obvious that each author of books, magazines, manuals denominates our bayonets "Modelo Argentino 1909" in the most appropriate and formal way according to their research so that they are understood mainly in the bibliographic media of any country in the world.
Kind regards and thank you very much for your attention!

Ejército Argentino =

Он был сделан исключительно для сопровождения кавалерийского карабина Mauser «Modelo Argentino 1909» (также построенного D.G.F.M.-F.M.A.P.
